Elephant herd with new-born calf

Calf approximately 18 hours old. Elephant Paddock, Chester, 17th December 2016.
Father Aung Bo on the left was restlessly roaming around the paddock and repeatedly looking at the calf, without getting too close. The other youngster, Nandita, was obviously fascinated by the baby, but rather rough if she got too close, so mother Sundara was careful to keep between them. Grandmother Sithami and great-grandmother Thi Hi Way can just be seen behind Sundara; but the whole Hi Way family was sticking close together and walking at a very slow pace for the baby's sake.

Nandita suddenly looks huge! Fingers and everything else crossed for a happy future for them all.

@Gigit You're right about Nandita, it's hard to remember that she's only 16 months old. As the zoo website says, she is the baby's half-sister, but if I've worked it out correctly she is also the baby's half-great-aunt. Perhaps it would not be surprising if she is a little confused.
