Is it just me, or does anyone else see the blood in the top left corner, in the mock rock shelter....

Maybe it's meant to be a cave painting?

Indeed, what the heck is that red blob? One of the Elephant Odyssey designers being attacked by an irate ZooChatter? It seems that the brand-new, $45 million exhibit has its pros and cons and is definitely not the knockout set of habitats that one expects from one of the world's truly great zoos. The good (reptiles, amphibians, condors), the bad (Flintstone figurines) and the ugly (horse and donkey paddocks, all of that steel piled up outside the elephant barn).

For me this is the kind of great exhibit I would expect to see from the world's greatest zoo. If anyone of you noticed everyone on here who has actually visited the exhibit has positive reviews of it (except for the hideous domestic horse paddock), while everyone who has not visited has nothing but complaints. I am really confused as to why everyone is so disappointed with the sculptures. If any of you read the SDZ blog you would know that the sculptures were actually carefully crafted to look really realistic. I am not very impressed with the reptile exhibits as that is not that difficult to create good reptile tanks. I am really impressed with the elephant habitat most of all, and the other large mammal exhibits like the jaguars, tapirs, and lions. The ugly would be the horse paddock.

You could say the same about RSCC.

Patrick, the rule of thumb here at Zoo Chat is to shoot first and ask question later ;)

I don't believe actually that any zoo visitor is so stupid that he thinks he's in Africa when he's actually in San Diego. The money should be spent on the animals and what benefits them, not on ridiculous statues and pieces of arts. People go to zoos to see animals and to art galleries to see …?

yeah i don't know what that is, but it wasn't there when I went last time and neither tapir was missing. No reports of injured or birth giving tapirs either...

and as for the tar pits sculptures.. the zoo believes they have some educational value, every time I go there though, I just walk past it.
