Would be nicer if it were more central, and if the wire weren't in the way But yes, joking apart, for the level I'm at with my photography I'm quite amazed by the fact I managed to get that shot. [Still more proud of the splendid sunbird shot though]
I was quite lucky with these, I noticed a pattern so could get some nice shots. It hovered for a while, before landing on a branch for a few seconds and going for another fly around. I was told to expect a challenge, I think I caught them lucky though to photograph them for the precious few seconds of them being still

Actually, being off-centre makes it a more interesting shot. And the wire is unfortunate, a better background would be nice too, but I understand these are impediments we have to live with. Even so, to catch a hummingbird in flight like that is a real challenge and you've done very well. Better to practise in a zoo, than have to start learning from scratch on your first trip to the Americas!

That's true - I do think I've done really well to catch this shot, especially considering you have to be quite split second (I use manual focus as it tends to be more reliable than auto, that would probably have focused on a branch or the netting, so by the time I've focused the animal has usually moved )
Yes, autofocus can be quite annoying with regards to wire, or if your animal is in a tree amongst the foliage. I tend to have my camera set so only the focusing spot in the centre of frame is the point of focus.
Just as an aside, if I'm trying to photgraph wild birds in flight, I set my autofocus to servo, as then all focus points will be active and is constantly focusing and updating.
