All orangutans in zoos should really be able to climb like this.

Agreed, especially when you compare it to the other UK Orang enclosures, RORA is on a whole different planet in terms of climbing opportunities.

Gentle Lemur, another excellent set of photos by the way and I love the sequence that you've done!

Indeed, makes a change to see them actually be able to brachiate. Very impressive sight, especially with that tiny baby in tow. I went today, she was showing that baby off at the window and she then went outside and gave it to the older youngster to play with whilst she gathered leaves to make a nest. Awesome :)
Are the Borneons in the two netted cages and are all the orangs in the two open exhibits Sumatran? It confuses me where they have a sign for both subspecies on every exhibit.

Yes that is one of the few minor complaints i have with the exhibit.

Generally speaking, the Borneans have the old Orang complex and the netted enclosures and the Sumatrans have the RORA indoor enclosures and the two outdoor enclosures (however, I imagine the outdoor enclosure with the waterfall is off-limits at the moment because it will probably need to be adjusted for the otters)

Right, thanks for clearing that up. I thought I saw a Bornean in the netted exhibit as it was sat at the top not moving lol. Compared to Sumatrans they're boring as sin.

It was ever thus. The Philadelphia(USA) Zoo kept both(then)subspecies as long ago as the 1930's. An excerpt from their guidebook of the time states;

Our Sumatran Orangutans are almost as active as the Chimpanzees. The Borneo orangutans are more phlegmatic...

So Sumatrans are more endangered and make a better exhibit... You'd think more zoos would go for them!

It's so heart-warming to see the orangs brachiating at Chester. (I'm very jealous of all of you who can visit there without a long drive and overnight stay).
