Emmen has a herd of 15 elephants. One big bull (Radza), 5 younger bulls, and 9 females. In 15 years time 17 elephants were born here! Only two of them died.

In some respects these herds are easier to look after than just a couple of animals. They entertain each other , and the keeper interactions so necessary to avoid boredom with two animals can actually be counter-productive with a herd.Rebellious , psychotic behaviour is kept at a minimum in an integrated herd, and husbandry operations are more fluid. The downside is obviously that if you have the average-sized zoo , you end up with precious little land to be shared out among the rest of your stock.I am a big fan of elephants , but I think that in the real world , small zoos with a no-elephant policy may be making a good decision.
The whole Emmen Zoo will be relocated a bit outside the city of Emmen. Some of it is already finished which is what you can see in the "Emmen - New" gallery. Check this thread for more information about the new zoo.
Thanks for the explanation. I checked out the thread, the zoo´s web site and the map here at ZooChat. What a wonderful and incredible project! In a city with only 100 000 inhabitants... fantastic! And still - I really liked most of what I saw in the old zoo.
But the coming new elephant exhibit promises to be something spectacular! And how about that "baboon canyon"? Great stuff, indeed!
