This huge new barn was part of the $13.5 million Encounter Africa project, which greatly enlarged the elephant exhibit and also saw the addition of a black rhino exhibit, steeply sloped lion exhibit and 2 more meerkat exhibits (the zoo has 3 of them now!) to the African Rift Valley zone to form a cohesive, rather splendid African section. Does anyone know the square footage of the barn? One major flaw is that visitors walk alongside the elephant exhibit and down a boardwalk into the barn but that area is a dead-end and there is no other option but to turn around and head back in the same direction.
