Of course whether they are really first is a matter of debate (my vote is for Central Park, New York). But they vehemently defend this title and use it as a major marketing point. This may be due in part to the fact that the entire city of Philadelphia has a tourism industry based on its history and a number of "firsts." If you order their visitor guide, you will see several listings for "first (whatever)" in America.
