Both of the 16-year old wolf brothers that still lived at GaiaZoo died a few month after my visit, in November of 2023. Currently this exhibit is empty.
Given the return of the grey wolf to the low countries, GaiaZoo has chosen no longer to keep this species, but to modify this exhibit to house an endangered species.
GaiaZoo seem to have decided to turn the collection in the zoo's Taiga area more towards regionally or internationally endangered species lately, and further away from species specifically somehow tied to the Limburg region or the Netherlands. They have also announced the alien species aviary will be getting new endangered inhabitants in 2024 (blue-throated macaw, red-lored amazon and Bali myna).
What species will be going into the former wolf exhibit has not been confirmed yet. At some point a sign mentioned the more endangered Iberian wolf (a species GaiaZoo previously kept), but that sign has since been changed to only mention that they researching which endangered species can move into this space, and will be working on the exhibit in 2024 to modify it for a new species.
