Schloss Hartenfels is a large castle in Torgau, Saxony. A stunning castle that overlooks the River Elbe, it is perhaps most famous for the European Brown Bears that inhabit part of its moat. They can be seen without paying to enter the castle, as can the entire courtyard and the renowned spiral staircase, and are perhaps the most iconic feature of the town. Certainly, when speaking to locals while approaching Torgau, they were what we were most often told to look out for.
Inhabiting two huge enclosures that can be connected or separated depending on the behaviour of the bears, a brother and sister who I believe were both born here, the quality of life is surprisingly very good for bears that live within a castle!
