I've been lucky enough to see Hoopoos feeding close up on a couple of occasions in China now and they really are extraordinarily beautiful. The way the crest flicks up and down and the flash of their wings as they flitter from patch of ground to patch of ground is mesmerising.
It's hard to tell from this photo, but the wings look a lot less black and white than the individuals I have seen in China.
