I saw Tombo in his prime at Auckland Zoo, where he and his brother Tonyi headed up their pride. They were littermates born at the Philadelphia Zoo 17/03/1996. Tombo was the dominant male until the lionesses, Kura and Sheeka, were introduced. Tonyi contested Tombo's dominance and overthrew him, securing mating rights with Kura. Tonyi remained the dominant male for the rest of their lives. Tonyi died 31/12/2015; Tombo died 28/10/2016.

Tombo is survived in the region by his two daughters at Wellington Zoo, Djane and Zhara.
