I haven''t been to the one at Bronx, so I cannot comment, but this is a walkthrough lemur exhibit (the only one in the US). I found it to be great, especially the aye-ayes, though I didn't get a good view of them.
I've not seen this exhibit, and am thus only commenting on this photo - but this looks just horrible. It has a real smell of Colchester Zoo to it. And that's not good. Not when to comes to creating fake trees, certainly. "Edward Scissorhands"? Possibly. It reminds me of the forest in Disney's Snow White. It's actually rather creepy.
I would agree that its not that attractive, but its very spacious and the trees are great for climbing, making this a great exhibit for the lemurs. And isn't that the most important thing?

So why are all the photos of lemurs down on the ground, mostly under the boardwalk? No shade, huge "tree limbs" that no doubt feel just like the concrete slabs they are, and possibly the animals are embarrassed by the utterly banal attempt to imitate "nature." I'm sorry, this is just really bad.....
