This 1.2 acre hippo exhibit is certainly one of the more spacious ones in North America, and the pool alone is over half an acre in size! However, the Canadian winters are cold and the barn has a very tiny heated pool that can only accommodate 2 hippos. Fantastic outdoor area with sandy banks and muddy resting areas, but the barn is so-so at best.
The zoo actually claims that the exhibit can hold up to 4 hippos, but while the outdoor area is huge the barn doesn't seem big enough for more animals. The female is Hazina, the male is Haben, and they are both around 4-5 years old. Haben was born on August 11th, 2005, at the Granby Zoo in Quebec, Canada.
