But seriously, considering this is one of the best (and as you said historic) museums of natural history in the nation, I would expect everything (especially their taxonomy) would be up to date.
But lets be honest here, the only people who actually care to look at the sign and remember the info, are the people who already know it.
Domestic livestock are not game, but wild cattle are. The sentence is poorly written and ambiguous - but wrong either way.
It is also poor style to capitalise animal names such as lion or tiger - capital letters should only be used when an animal's name includes a proper name or an adjective derived from one, eg Bengal tiger or Indian lion.
it is historic signage from the 1920s (or at least the text is; the sign itself obviously more recent). John W. Hope who prepared the animals, as per the note at the bottom of the sign, is the chap who also created the bas-relief of the Baluchitherium at the museum, and Clarence C. Rosenkranz did the habitat murals behind the dioramas.
When I was a boy I had a number of books which still used Leo instead of Panthera.
You know I've always thought AMNH did such a great job redoing the NA taxidermy I was and still am wondering when they'll get to other halls. I'd place Asia right behind Primates which is in desperate need of a revamp.
