I hate to say bad things about this place because I'm trying to like it but this looks way too small for fishing cats and is that black round thing at the back a water container?
Agreed snowleopard. It does not seem to be that big but that is not my main concern. There appears to be a lack of pretty much everything and the exhibit is seen here is totally bare
This is it, used to hold a pallas cat... So I know I defend this place as it's trying, has passion and the like, but this is just stupid. Far too small for a pallas cat, let alone a large fishing cat. And there's no barrier.
All I can hope is that the owner is just waiting to expand onto the adjacent land, they could do wonders with this place then
This enclosure is bigger than it looks, it has been used to hold the pallas cats before moving them to their new exhibit. It is more than adequate in size compared to alot of larger zoos. Again this is the same for the fishing cats. They are there until their new exhibit is built. I has seen alot of larger species kept in smaller places in other collections. I really would like people to stop critising a place that is doing alot of really good work. Rome was not built in a day!
@Al: I respect your comments as you are a professional zookeeper, and you often have interesting postings, but do you really think that the cage in this photo is acceptable for any species of cat?
If this piece of junk is only a temporary holding facility for the fishing cats, does that mean the new fishing cat enclosure is going to be as magnificent as the bedroom-sized snow leopard enclosure?
The snow leopard enclosure is actually pretty big, and although not as tall it is probably around the same size as the leopard enclosure at Howletts that you said seemed to be the best leopard exhibit you've ever seen. I know the Howletts one had more climbing opportunities, but as Al said, Rome wasn't built in a day and they have slowly improved the clouded leopard exhibit by installing more branches. If I remember rightly the owner of RSCC posted on here a few times and said that all their wood is FSC friendly, meaning that they have to wait to either raise funds to get it or wait for a special order, can't really remember though.
