Fiskeriets Hus - Invertebrate tanks and touch pool

The boat-like contraption is a touch pool for plaice. The small tanks contain most of the aquarium's invertebrate collection, for example crustaceans, starfish and whelks, as well as a couple of small fish species.

Fiskeriets Hus ("The House of Fishery") is an attraction in the small fishing village/surfing resort of Hvide Sande at the Danish west coast. It's mostly a museum for local history, especially fishery and shipping, but it also features a small aquarium in the basement with 32 tanks and (based on my observation) around 50 species. Most of the species are Danish saltwater fish/invertebrates, but they also have a few fish species from the rivers and brooks around Hvide Sande.

The aquarium is very "independent" - all of their fish are wild-caught or bred by themselves, and they don't really cooperate with other aquaria and zoos. They do have a zoo license, though, and the fish generally live in acceptable conditions, if nothing special (the same standards as all of the other small Danish coast aquaria).

May 2017.
