The one on the left is the Chilean, the greater is on the right.

Yes indeedy - Greaters are the palest-coloured flamingos, all things being equal - and the pink 'knees' are typical of a Chilean.

What proportion of the Australian flamingo population is this? I know they're pretty thin on the ground over there.

Thanks - that is certainly what I'd call thin on the ground.

Absolutely bizarre - European zoos have flamingos left, right and centre. Slimbridge alone has nearly 550 flamingos (of all six species - see http://www.zoochat.com/513/greater-flamingo-flock-slimbridge-06-02-a-128319/). That's 275 times the Australian population at a single collection.

Is there any hope of importation or is it still a complete no-go?

Bird importation is still pretty much impossible.

Thanks - I suspected as much. Such a shame that you guys are missing one of the absolute staple animals in Europe/N America.

Now that's something I would love to see!

It's a fantastic display but makes for something of a flamingo overload! You can see my photos of the place in the gallery here.

There are four flamingo flocks - the main Greater flock is approx 180 birds, the Caribbean flock around 150, a mixed flock of 120 Chileans and 25 or so Andeans, and a smaller mixed flock including the 50 or so Lessers, a couple of dozen surplus Greaters, and the two (sadly both male) James's.

It's also very educational, of course, in a bird-spotter kind of way - all the species at hand for close comparison! Slimbridge is both a captive collection specialising in waterfowl and other wetland animals and one of the most important wetland nature reserves in the UK, so the bird-spotter in me is well catered for!

it was put on another thread that a group of pigieons were found to have newcastle disease in quarantine. So bird importaion could be done if the zoos wanted to.

Flamingo - April 1910

I thought there was an import of Greater Flamingos ex Slimbridge [hatched & hand-reared under quarantine] to an Australian Zoo in recent years?
