I can't remember ever seeing flamingos in an aviary before, as usually they are out in some sort of island lagoon. This is a fairly spacious enclosure for them.
The Los Angeles Zoo has a small group of Greater Flamingos in the zoo's aviary. It think it works well for them because their wings are not clipped and they are breeding well (at least 2 hatchings a year).
I agree with mstickmanp, in geramny, we also have many problme swith crows, which are stealing eggs or chicks and kill them. So the aviary means a better protection for the birds, and by the way, I don't like it to cut the birds wings.
bueatiful avairy and more zoos should house flamingos in this way,it is clear that fully winged birds breed better.I am due to send a letter to slimbridge asking them to consider sending their james and andean to this collection for the good of the species as they have shown they are able to breed both whereas slimbridge has not had much luck with them.
All the Slimbridge birds are pinioned, also their Andeans have bred repeatedly, and were the first to breed in captivity. You are right that they have never bred James', and have only one or two geriatric examples left.

This is a great aviary! I also don´t like the practice of clipping wings, I find it barbaric - taking an ability to fly from a bird? I wonder how many zoos are using aviaries, because all the zoos I´ve been to have the flamingos outside, with clipped wings. :-(

It seems to me that during the last few years it has almost become "trendy" for zoos to build aviaries for their flamingos in order to stop clipping their wings. In Denmark both Copenhagen Zoo and Odense Zoo has opened large new aviaries in 2009 and 2011 and Aalborg Zoo is also planning an aviary for their flock.
