Flock of feral Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca), 2019-08-11

Egyptian geese are considered a feral invasive alien species in the European Union and they are no longer allowed to be kept, traded or bred in captivity. However, there's a lot of them already out there, and taking measures to control them is legally required under EU regulation.

But the species is native to the Danube River Valley! The EU still requires eradication there?

@birdsandbats I don't know about that, I would have to look into it. A few source I quickly checked only cite Egyptian geese as being native to Sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile Valley.

At this point in most European countries - and certainly in the low countries - there are now already so many Egyptian geese eradicating them is pretty much impossible in terms of cost and effort, although populations will still need to be controlled through shooting, capturing of birds in cages followed by euthanasia and pricking or shaking of eggs in nests.
