Flying display, June 2013

A buzzard on the wing. I can't say this flying display was much cop. Species? Barn owl, buzzard, kestrel, red-leged seriema. Flying? Just a bit of popping across the arena, and some hovering from the kestrel. Commentary? Pedestrian, with the same jokes that have been trotted out for the past few years. I think London needs to refresh its offering here - they could learn a great deal from zoos where such shows are done with a great deal more panache and imagination.

The setting - a lawn in the middle of a crowded zoo, set in an urban park - does not lend itself to fast falcons stooping, nor big raptors.

The lawn has been sitting there awaiting further developments since 1976 and spends most of its life empty. Time to turn it back into an animal exhibit IMHO, preferably a charismatic species. This site is the heart of London Zoo. It really needs to have more than an under-used lawn.
