Fort Worth Zoo - Texas Wild!

August 2008. Coyote.
When I was there in early 2004, they actually had a black coyote! Before that, I had no idea coyotes came in a melanistic color morph. I tried looking it up on the internet, but could not find any information on it. I have certainly never seen another one and have never seen it mentioned in any books or articles. Does anyone know about this?

I had never heard about a black coyote, but in a guidebook from the 1940's San Diego appeared to have a black red wolf.

I didn't know anyone had red wolves until recently, but I guess San Diego could get whatever they want (especially back then). There is a theory that red wolves are the result of a natural crossbreeding between coyotes and the common (or gray) wolf, the latter of which is well known to occur in a melanistic morph.
