Free-ranging Orangutan Area

August 11, 2024
Interesting way to see them - do the Orangs come down onto the visitor paths or are they prevented from doing that? Or is the amount of climbing available keeping them up in the trees more than some captive ones?

On closer view looks like there are stoppers in the trees preventing them from descending? Banham uses something similar with the howlers. Even so must be quite a thing to see them as close above etc.

@Lafone The orangutans cannot come down onto the pathways, but the really cool thing about this setup is that it's difficult for a first-time visitor to tell where the "exhibit" space begins and ends. It's a neat experience.

@Lafone if you zoom into the photo you can see the hot wire around the tree trunks which stops the Orangutans from descending to the ground.
