Meerkats are one of the signature species of the Living Desert. Until recently they were in a rather small cage but now have two yards to run around in.

This is a huge improvement over their previous enclosure. Do you remember what is in their former exhibit now?
I believe this new exhibit is next to what will become the new lion exhibit. Did you see someone (extremely misguided IMO) actually started a petition online to stop this because they think it will cause undue stress on the meerkats to have them next to lions?!
I think that the lion complex is going in over by the African savanna exhibit, well away from the meerkats and other small mammals. I haven't been back to the Living Desert since taking this photo a year ago, so I don't know what is going on with the lions.
There was a story a few months back that said the Living Desert got (is getting?) a fossa. Maybe it is going into the former meerkat cage? Or maybe they have finally replaced those cages with some new exhibits? There were still sand cats in them last time I was there.
