Future Exhibit - California Sea Lion Pool

July 19th, 2010.
This sign mentions the $120 million that the Saint Louis Zoo has at its disposal for zoo improvements, which is amazing considering that the zoo is easily one of the very best in North America. There is a lot of history here, such as the Primate House (1925), Reptile House (1927) and Bird House (1930) that still terrific in the 21st century. The hoofstock collection in Red Rocks is outstanding, the reptile collection is awesome, the bird collection is staggering, Chain of Lakes is beautiful (with over 60 species of waterfowl - the most of any American zoo), Penguin + Puffin Coast is spectacular and freezing cold, the Great Ape complex is excellent, Big Cat Country somewhat surprisingly holds up very well after 35 years of operation, the Insectarium is marvellous, River's Edge is brilliant and the future is bright with all of that cash stored up for improvements. The 1921 bear pits are ugly and outdated, but they are being renovated within a few years and it is difficult to see how this zoo could really improve itself as it is already so darn impressive!
