Future Plans - Beluga Whale Exhibit (2.5 times larger than the current one)

March 27th, 2016.
Will the expanded beluga pool take over existing exhibit space from other species like the dolphins and seals or is it expanding into new exhibit area?

Will belugas eventually be the only cetaceans at the aquarium?

The aquarium, through a series of huge posters and images, has made a bold public statement to maintain beluga whales in the collection and dramatically increase the size of the pool. There is room for the current outdoor tanks to be expanded and I think that the first casualty will be the penguin exhibit. Also, the sea otter exhibits (while more than adequate) were built in the 1970's and the aquarium has wanted to upgrade them for quite some time.

I wonder why they're advertising 360 degree viewing as a feature of this exhibit? Being able to walk around the whole pool and the cross-views of people on the other side will only make it appear smaller than it is.

I'm assuming the belugas in the picture are not to scale? If they are, that seems like a rather small habitat.

This is very true, they would be better off having viewing on 2 or 3 sides, and extending the pool/s further to the back to make them bigger. Considering how little space Vancouver Aquarium has, I'm surprised they are dedicating such a large amount to the visitors areas.

Looking forward to seeing the penguin exhibit go though, that is definitely a low point of the collection.

@Newzooboy The Beluga Whales are deceased and the aquarium will not permanently house cetaceans ever again. The area in the image is now Steller's Bay, for Steller's Sea Lions.
