Just coming up to that time of year when wild ones drop in on our freshwater ponds and lakes for a few days on their migration routes. The 'summer duck' is so named for these appearances as its Britain's only migratory duck species. I like the call the Drakes make too- sort of a rolling/grunting noise.(Heard them at Arundel..)

Funny you should mention that - this individual was calling in the flamingo/wader aviary and it took us quite a while to identify the culprit! Very distinctive noise.
 
Though the drakes are beautiful, I believe this is known as the species of duck which wears its breeding pumage for the shortest part of the year.:(
