From the buffalo/river hog/pelican exhibit to the gorilla/mangabey one.

Is it true this place is actually quite small in acreage/size?

If so the layout with all the thick rock walls and wide watermoats seems to have used up a lot of the available space rather unnecessarily?

It's not huge but very few of the exhibits feel small. The buffalo paddock was probably as big as/bigger than Chester's (albeit very different in style!), and the gorilla exhibits are huge. What there isn't is any wasted space in the visitor areas - no lawns, no wide planting areas for the most part. Just a path that's not massively wide but wide enough.
