Nice shot, Jordan, and all credit for getting one of the animal obviously awake! Was this the first time you'd ever seen Giant Pandas?

Certainly is, Yang Guang was especially active as he was waiting to be fed. Both just came in due to the strong winds but Tian Tian was sleeping in an extremely awkquad position.

Great shot. Someone else reported the female 'curled up in a ball,' is that how you saw her?

Did they live up to what you expected(size, appearance etc)?

She was sat in a awkquad position. They were a real suprise of how I imagined them, the male was as I expected but a little smaller. The female Tian Tian was really smaller than I thought. You maybe interested that there to be introduced soon as she is in season soon.

In the 'ChiChi' days it was generally regarded that females had two short 'heat' periods per year- one in autumn, one in spring. They are usually noticeable by behavioural changes- increased scent-marking and vocalisation('bleating'). But I guess nowadays they know exactly when any individual female Panda is likely to come into heat, particularly a proven breeder like this one, from her previous records. No doubt Edinburgh will have been advised as to exactly the time to put them together during the heat period also.

The keeper did say they know when she's in season when she spends more time around the pool area. She had been doing so a few days before.

Maybe the evidence/views on how often they come into heat have changed then, if it sounds like she has already done so since her arrival. I know it always used to be maintained they only came into season once or twice a year, usually spring and autumn.
