It wouldn't have been possible to get this shot without a macro lens - in this instance a Canon 100mm prime, the same as for the atlas moth image - so if it's the sort of photography you're interested in the investment is definitely worthwhile.

The small details from zoos are largely missing from the ZooChat galleries, a shame as many of them deserve a closer look.
 
and it reveals so much!
The butterflies actually embracing the flower!
And that plant has scale insects!
 
Will now be saving to invest in a macro lens for my Nikon
The detail on this image is facinating and makes the image extremely interesting
