Giraffe and Elephants

February 2011: Giraffe with African Elephants in background
Has anybody seen both the Lowry Park and Dallas giraffe-elephant-savanna exhibits? How do they compare? Many people have commented on the excellence of the Dallas exhibits...are the Lowry Park exhibits pictured here excellent also?

The Lowry Park exhibits are decent exhibits. Judging from what I saw in the Dallas Zoo gallery, they're not as good as the Dallas exhibits, but not bad. I think the elephant enclosure size is somewhere around 3 acres.

Dallas and Lowry Park are in different leagues. Some aspects of Lowry park seem incredibly thrown together. Lowry park aims to be more of a CHILDRENS zoo, while Dallas aims to be a world class institution.
Dallas had around a $42 million dollar budget while Lowry park zoo somewhat hastily threw together their African zone in anticipation of their African elephants from Swaziland (as demonstrated by their African forest area).

After visiting some of the most esteemed elephant enclosures around the country, Tampa leaves some to be desired. Although I am somewhat biased, with Dallas as my home zoo.

Lowry Park's elephant Savanna is very functional, and well designed... for the elephants that is. Ascetically it is no where near Dallas.
