Some of these Blackpool Zoo animal houses (the old one for elephants, giraffes, orangutans) look more like army bunkers than zoo exhibits. That sounds harsh, but the overwhelming 'functionality' of those three structures (at least from the outside) is the dominant architectural theme.
The old elephant house and main entrance are old airport hangars. The zoo was built on an airport space. However the giraffe house only opened in 2008 and the orang utan exhibit was redesigned in 2014. I agree all the houses including the new elephant house are very functional looking.
