ive been many times. the house is covered with pidgeon droppings, its small and dosent give enough room for the giraffe to gallop or even trot . they share it with even more animals and its boring. baring in mind the giraffe is one of my favourites
I have shared my view about the giraffe house at London Zoo in other threads and disagee with many of the criticisms I have read. I have visited many times. It is not covered in pigeon droppings and the full height section has never been shared with any other species of animal. In recent years a single anoa has been housed in one of the lower sides and before that, a long time ago now, okapi in the other. Before that zebra and giraffe were mixed outside; the zebra lived in one of the low sections. The giraffes living in this house have often lived well into old age and before breeding was restricted to specific subspecies, many young have been successfully raised here. The outside space has developed over the years and in my view, the oldest giraffe house in the country still provides appropriate accommodation. I have observed as much trotting and galloping there as in any of the other giraffe enclosures I have seen elsewhere. I think there is a lot of unfair but fashionable criticism out there.
I too have seen this exhibit. I liked the look of it, it seemed suitable for the Giraffes and was clean. I would have prefered to see more planting. But I understand planting isnt easy in Hoofstock enclosures, especially when you are space restricted.
I also seem to remember a well built walk way, are there any pictures of this Giraffes walkway?
yes they can trot a little bit but its not far enough and even the keepers hav told me tht the giraffes at london can get arthritic easily.alos the fuems.. it cant be good for the giraffes cause the exhibit faces a very bisy road
Many zoos are beside roads. South Lakes Rhino/Giraffe/Baboon enclosure is beside the road. The whole of the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is beside the road.
Any Safari Park have a constant flow (some not always flowing) of cars through the animals enclosures. Many zoos have this. I dont believe it affects the animals welfare.
