I though it was just a bite (protection? aggression?) and a blood transferred disease passed into the gorilla this way...

A gorilla can kill other animal, for some reason, but never eat it, the gorillas are only vegetarians, they never eat any kind of flesh.

Tell that to the insects they sometimes consume in the wild...;)
And I recall at least one case of (though nowadays highly debated) cannibalism in Mountain gorillas, involving two females and a "disappearing" juvenile.

"Wasn't a monkey killed and even eaten by a gorilla here?" Psst-don't tell that the monkey in the picture..;)

i remember when they kept these apes and this species of primate together , i thought it was a wonderful mixed exhibit, i dont think that a monkey was killed at the Aspinall parks by a gorilla but i imagine if bustah the parks old alpha male chimpanzee had a chance with that saramago monkey he would have ripped it limb from limb

A monkey was most definately killed by a Gorilla at Port Lympne. The silverback male Jomie(then living alone in the old round Chimpanzee cage) 'killed and partially ate'( I quote from HELP) a Colobus monkey that was sharing the cage.

A few years later Jomie(son of Djoum x Lomie) was sent to London Zoo(who owned him) and after two years died. Tests shortly after he arrived showed he carried Hepatitis B with him from Port Lympne. As he was born at Howletts it seems perhaps likely he contracted it from injesting some parts of the Monkey.

I am not sure if any of the Samango monkeys were killed by Gorillas also- the remainder now occupy a seperate enclosure at Port Lympne but do not breed for some reason.

The male Gorilla 'Motaba' at Melbourne also killed a De Brazza Monkey quite recently.

fascinating , i never knew a gorilla would do such a thing , do you have any idea why a gorilla would kill and eat a colobus monkey? stress of captivity maybe? pent up aggresion ? territorial dispute?
