I visited Givskud Zoo for 3 days before they closed for the season (can definitely reccommend their Hostel, it's pretty cheap if you're travelling with friends or family). After Kipenzi's death last spring the group is without a silverback, in the summer the troop was still getting along fine as Minnie had stepped up to lead. However, on my last visit Kahla seemed to have had enough of Minnie running the show, which has left a lot of tension in the group as the two ladies are making it hard to establish their inner hierarchy. In nature when the silverback of a western lowland gorilla troop dies the females will spread out to new groups. It should therefore settle down again when a new silverback is introduced. I was told they are getting a lot closer at getting a new silverback, and are hoping to get one before they open next year. I heard a few rumors of who might be transfering to the zoo, but obviously was just gossip!
