Before the old gorilla exhibits were used for gorillas, they used to be bear grottoes. Which explains why they are in the North American section of the zoo.
Thanks for that information. I didn't realise the enclosure had been used for bears before. Has this enclosure changed at all? It has been nearly 7 years since I visited.

Yeah, these exhibits were later destroyed in 2003, and in 2007 the new Campo Gorilla Reserve opened with two enclosures. One of the exhibits is for the family and the second, which is also smaller, is for two bachelors. There are some pictures in the gallery of the new exhibit.
The bear grottoes were modified in order to be able to be used for gorillas.
