Anybody interested in great auks should read Errol Fuller’s excellent book “The Great Auk” (1999) which catalogues every known museum specimen of great auk and every known great auk egg.
Surprisingly this book records a couple of instances of great auks being kept as “pets” one allegedly kept in the 1760s became very tame and followed its owner around.
