Great Egret with Fence Lizard

9/19/2023
Always interesting to see what kind of prey these guys will take! I saw them hunting anoles in Florida and saw one eat a Semipalmated Sandpiper once here in Wisconsin. I've come across iNaturalist observations of them feeding on bats, and, in one instance, a Yellow Rail!

@birdsandbats Yeah the bigger herons are certainly quite a lot more versatile in diet than their classic 'fish-eater' image implies. I've watched Great Blues hunting and catching pocket gophers on several occasions for instance, and I've seen lizard-hunting from Great Egrets a few times now.
