how many does the zoo have now? I remember when the pair first arrived and they were the only ones in Russia (apparently). I think that must have been around 2006 or 2007?
I think there are 4 now, minimum 2 females. Need to clarify, maybe there's more.
The maximum number present in same time was 7 including offspring, that occurred at old, more spacious exhibit. Sadly, it has been demolished to be rebuilt for penguins (that exhibit wasn't completed and probably won't be), and originally it was a crocodile enclosure)))
The new chevrotains exhibit is smaller, darker, and with no ground-level view
Moscow zoo was the first to keep this species in Russia and transferred 1.1 to Ekaterinburg in 2005. In 2 years, 3 calves were born, and so on.
Our chevrotains bred regularly, but due to females' aging, 2012 offspring didn't survive long after birth.
