Grizzly Bear Exhibit

Apr. 10th, 2011.
Do many US zoos breed their Grizzlies, or are they managed just as exhibit animals?

Does this enclosure make use of existing natural features?

I agree with Gilgamesh. Columbus will be good in 15 years when all the pine trees grow.

This outstanding exhibit is part of the award-winning Northern Trail and the best use of existing natural features is the backdrop of coniferous trees that hide the edge of the habitat. As far as breeding is concerned I cannot think of a single instance within the past 20 years where an American zoo bred grizzlies. Woodland Park Zoo's bears came from a captive research study program 18 years ago and most grizzlies in American zoos are "problem bears" captured from the wild or abandoned cubs.

Still one of the great American zoo exhibits. I visited Woodland Park Zoo back in 1996, and have yet to see any bear exhibit that equals it. It's about time for me to make it back up that way again.
