Yes, Guangzhou Zoo imported a pair of Eld's deer from Hainan in 1999, and they had given birth to 5 descendants up to 2012 (4 survived).

How many of this form are kept in captivity in China? And has there been any attempt at swapping animals with Thai zoos?

The wild and semi-wild population in reserves in Hainan Island has growed up to more than 2000 now from 44 in 1970s. According to an survey in 2007, the captive population was 81 in China, also most in Hainan Island deer farms. In mainland China there were only 9 at Shanghai Wild Animal Park and 4 in Guangzhou Zoo, but I'm not sure wether Shanghai WAP still keeps this species or not.

The Chinese population of this form looks as if it will be important in the conservation of this rare deer.

Does the zoo still keep this species? I hope to visit soon. Can you recommend any other unusual species here or at chimelong safari??

For me the most attractive species in Guangzhou Zoo are serpent Eagle, peacock-pheasant, Hainan Eld's deer, Javan rusa, Large&Small Indian Civet, Asiatic Golden Cat, lion-tailed macaque. Maybe you will also be interested in some other Chinese or South-easten Asian species that we considered to be common, such as snub-nosed monkey and South China Tiger.

As for Chimelong Safari Park, it also has many wonderful species such as Borneo elephant, just go and enjor.

@Deer Forest I guess the civets had left the collection by 2018? Or was there a small mammal house I missed?
