I've seen a couple of these guys in my backyard this year. I never can tell whether they are Hairy Woodpeckers or Downy Woodpeckers as it is difficult to tell the species apart.
@snowleopard I had trouble, too, until I learned this tip. If the beak is about half the length of the head, it's a Downy. If it's the full head length, it's a Hairy.
