Largest exhibit in the Ancient City, home to three Aoudads or Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia) and a lage group (two to three dozen?) Hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas). Quite a nice exhibit, but difficult to get a good overview of.
This sprawling exhibit reminds me a little of the new baboon enclosure at Emmen Zoo, although Amersfoort has taken the 'ruined temple' theme to a whole new level. The habitat does seem to be fairly large and there are sections where it almost seems inconceivable that the baboons are kept enclosed without making a break for greener pastures. An extraordinary exhibit!
@snowleopard You are not wrong about Amersfoort having taken the ancient temple to a whole new level with the Ancient City, which is a rather large area with lots of details. And yet this area is actually nearly 20 years old now (first opened in May of 1999).
As for the baboons being contained... the exhibit is nearly entirely surrounded by water (although much of it was covered with duckweek and algae at the time of my visit) which I personally think is probably wide enough to keep the baboon in their exhibit. I did see some baboons wading into the water, but only at the shallow edge to get some of the algae as supplementary food.
