Well maybe it was heading home, or maybe just looking for a mouse for breakfast. I went for a hike this morning and a hiker coming the other way said a couple told him they saw "a baby rattlesnake" on the trail I was taking. (It was just past a trail split and they decided to take the other trail after they saw it). I kept my eyes open and very shortly saw it a bit off trail (if I had not been looking for it I probably would have missed it altogether). It was larger than a baby, kind of mid sized (maybe a juvenile or young adult). It was spread out and I stopped to watch and it started moving slowly in my direction. I took some photos and hoped it would come even closer for photos (but not too close - I know how to keep a safe distance). However it was heading for a hole, which it proceeded down, so I thought it might make a fun shot to get the tail and rattle just before they disappeared underground.
