Hippopotamus Habitat

Moved here temporarily to await the completion of Pachyderm Forest several years ago, this Hippo enclosure was one of three Indian Rhino yards. From opening day of 1966, this had always been the Indian Rhino exhibit. Plans for Pachyderm Forest no longer include Hippos, so here the Hippos remain(now one lone male) indefinitely. The two current Indian Rhino yards, to the left, the former Malayan Tapir exhibit, to the right, where you'll usually see a lone Rhino, was built more recently to give the Rhinos more overflow space.
