Hippos in the indoors enclosure

The baby (not so small anymore) resting on the small concrete island (I would have wanted this hippo enclosure to have included at least a small area of soft substrate indoors), the three grown-ups in the water. I noticed how the big bull rested his head on the back of the cows. The water was unusually clean, meaning that the animals had not soiled it for a while. When they do that, the water fast becomes a big blur...

Top notch photo Dan,

I was watching Life (BBC documentry) and it was showing the relationship between some fish (Name escapes me) and Hippos and how the fish used the hippos for food, i.e. cleaning them and also easting their waste. This made me wonder why zoos don't try a similar set up? and reduce the need for cleaning the water which am sure is costly.

Thanks Taun!

There ARE a bunch of big fish in the pool. Possibly they eat rhino feces, I don´t know. But if so, they are not that very effective... :p

Very cool, I wouldn't fancy their job! ;)

If I remember Dan I will upload a picture I took of the one of the Jaguars at Chester zoo that you would like.

Oh yeah?! I am very fascinated by that jaguar exhibit at Chester! I have been told that the animals are not rotated in the way I would expect them to be, but still... I am thrilled about the exhibit as such and very interested in any new photo!

Its just an a good Jaguar shot by myself (you have to have some pleasure and the end results of your own photos).

Seeing as you comment on any Jaguar photo at chester that is at least half decent I thought I must share, to see what you thought.

I think those fish are called talipia...I saw them on an episode of dirty jobs because they were being used in a sewerage treatment plant.

Somtimes they do. The hippos have tree spacious indoor boxes behind the scenes that sometimes are covered in woodchips.
