The zoo opened in 1851 and closed in 1878 due to mismanagement, with the last animals sold in 1880 (to Antwerp Zoo among others). The zoo was located in what's now the park next to the museum and the building this exhibition is in was part of the zoo. Only its entrance gates survive to the present.
