Hoffmans Two-toed Sloth - 24/03/15

A very nice species, albeit one which is more or less "last chance to see" in Europe as the population is ageing and only continuing to be bred at this collection.

I think in the news thread it is said one of the boys is heading to Newquay. Is the female there young enough to breed?

Newquay doesn't have a female last I heard; it has a male born about 5 years ago, both parents of which died in 2012.

In which case the Skansen thread is wrong, it is said on there that there are 3.7 individuals in Europe, with these twins and their father being the only males.

Interesting; it is quite possible that the youngster at Newquay was incorrectly sexed until some point after my visit in January 2013, which is when I was told the above.

What I know: Universeum, who Terje (dad to the twins) lived 1 year (2012/2013) before he moved to S-A. The staff at Universeum and their vet confirmed that he was a Hoffmann already in 2012, after they had controlled his ''cervical vertebrae'', this was broadcast by SVT and the staff from Universeum were telling for the reporter that he was the ONLY male of Hoffmann in Europe!

S-A confirmed for about 1 month ago, that one of the young males will go to a English zoo next year, there a lonely female is waiting for a male. :)
