Looking into an aviary from ground level. Heavily planted, with high perches and nest box all the way at the back; great for the birds, not so great for visitors trying to spot them.

Actually, great for the visitors too. Zoo visitors are evolving in step with society as a whole and it is surprising how many of them take delight in viewing heavily planted enclosures. They often value a brief glimpse of the animals much more than if the animals had been clearly visible in sterile enclosures. This is a growing tendency, although there will always be a few intractables, of course. Nevertheless I am convinced the latter are already a small minority at least in occidental countries.

If the US qualifies as an "occidental country," I'm afraid your theory of evolution has failed to take hold here. Unless an animal is front and center visible, 99% of American zoo guests will dash past, many complaining that they "liked the old zoo better because you could SEE the animals!"
The most common complaint I've ever heard about the Kansas City Zoo is "If I wanted to see an animal far away, I would have gone to Africa!" I think seeing them further away in a larger exhibit, or hidden in a more lush exhibit makes the experience 100 times better.
