One of those universal truths of zoos - where there is an open-air penguin exhibit there are always hungry herons!

I don't see what's so amazing about this exhibit; just piles of fake rock from what the photos show. If Humboldt's nest in sand dunes, why not put this in mind if they want to create a true immersive experience?

I've got to agree that from all the photographs I've seen, Emmen's Penguin exhibit definitely looks nicer than Woodland Park's. And Woodland Park's is no slouch by far.

I will admit, that it is possible that I have this opinion because I'm not all that familiar with the geology of Punta San Juan, but the rockwork doesn't seem all that believable to me.

I'm told the designers were unhappy because the client (the zoo) wanted to represent the actual unusual geology of Punta San Juan, which is highly complex and therefore both difficult to replicate and inherently "unbelievable."

And while this exhibit is easily the best temperate climate penguin exhibit in the US, the Emmen exhibit is vastly superior.
