....to be fair to ZSL, though - the old buildings were never quite as grand as those at Vienna. I'm not sure those old aviaries would ever have looked like anything other than rather grim old aviaries.
To be honest, though: London's Bird of Prey aviaries had height, so important for a whole range of birds. Agreed, they weren't quite as handsome, but I don't suppose they'd been given much more than a very perfunctory lick and a promise in their lifetime. The Eastern Aviary was made to look much better in the 1980s.
It's the frustration of opportunities missed that grates. Vienna has chosen to embrace its history, recognising it as being a unique element of the site's appeal. Any lover of London would know that those running the site haven't always recognised that opportunity.
